An introduction to climbing & climbing safety
Here in the text is an introduction to what to look for when learning to climb and what the basic requirements are.
1. general rules/basic requirements
radical self-responsibility → climbing can be dangerous
Climb only after instruction
Only climb if you are able to do so and can assess the dangers (sober).
Follow the harness rules (see material)
Your safety, your life is the most important thing!
Use safe material and treat all material with care.
Check material for safety -> if in doubt, get a second opinion!
Only use your own/communal material
→ do not borrow things without asking for permission
Use knots safely and as intended
Always comply with local authority and borrowed harnesses.
also applies to ropes, slings,…
important for general safety and durability of the material
Only wear the harness when climbing and building → do not walk around or the like.
Keep at least 3 m distance from fire (do not smoke in the harness!!!)
do not eat, drink or pee
keep away from sharp objects
When can a skillshare take place?
To be able to share climbing skills you need:
Experience and material knowledge (all material on the harness should be safe to use).
basic didactic skills/knowledge should be communicated in an understandable way
the ability to rescue in <20 min, regular practice.
What else is needed:
mutual confidence in skills
Physical contact should be OK in case rescue is needed.
How is it taught?
Theory & practice, materials
calm situation, no time pressure
no showing off, no being a mack
Pay attention to group dynamics
Min. 1 instructor per rope
Harness for rescuing with instructors
Instructors and learners should be able to take criticism.
Beginners should only climb if competent persons are present.
Create space for questions and uncertainties
4. aerial structures
use safe material/never use unsafe material
Choose safe anchor points
create safe access
Do not overload
create possibility to secure
When abseiling, secure with a figure of eight or similar with a clip knot.
Use only material suitable for belaying
Avoid friction like carabiner on carabiner and rope on rope
Choose safe anchor points
Do not use slack rope
Use redundant belaying (if one belay fails, there is a second one).
only one person per rope/traverse (only exception: rescuing)
install a new belay before releasing the old one
